Down to the last drop: Getting to know our Sustainable Water Plan

Every ounce of water we use is accounted for with the help of our Sustainable Water Plan. Given the geographic location of Colorado Springs, supplying our community with clean, reliable water takes a resource plan—a very thorough, comprehensive one.

As soon as settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, they began to address the region’s water supply needs. That work continues today and includes making sure we can meet the future water needs of our community.

This long-term strategic plan details the ways in which we will provide a reliable, sustainable water supply for you in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner. This comprehensive approach incorporates:

  • water supply and demand;
  • water quality;
  • infrastructure reliability;
  • water reuse;
  • financial planning;
  • energy use;
  • regulatory and legal concerns;
  • public participation.

Future water supply? We’ve got a plan.

It’s no secret that our community isn’t situated next to a major body of water. It takes a full team to ensure our water makes its way to us. With the help of a statewide pipeline system, we bring clean water directly to you from as far as 100 miles away. Great plans have great goals, and ours covers our community for the next 50 years. It’s flexible and adaptable to challenges we anticipate, and it puts our customers at the forefront. In the face of unprecedented growth, climate variability and more demands on this essential resource in our state, we have solutions that will see us through.

As we grow, so do our ideas.

We’re ready to apply new strategies to achieve our service goals as our region grows. The unique modeling structure we applied in developing our plan imagined many possible scenarios and resulted in a balanced portfolio of objectives for how we acquire, use and reuse water. Through innovative ways to manage demand, integrate reuse, and develop new water supply and storage, we’ve taken tomorrow into account today.

But we didn’t do it without your help. We gathered and incorporated input from key stakeholders and the Colorado Springs community to put an effective plan in place that balances the forecasted needs of our community as a whole.

There’s so much that goes into our Sustainable Water Plan, but really, it’s about understanding that our future water supply relies on our ability to be flexible, innovative and conservation-minded…down to the last drop. Here is a high-level overview of our robust plan, which you can access at any time.
